This study aims to
elaborate the assembler-supplier relations observed in the World automotive
industry and determine the current situation of the assembler-supplier
relation in the Turkish automotive industry, then make evaluation comparing
the Turkish case with those countries.
Our study shows that, under its existing organisation and structure,
the Turkish automotive industry faces difficulty of competitiveness in
EU’s and the other developed countries markets even though the technology
level is sufficiently well suited. Despite the fact that some developments
have been observed in the assembler-supplier relations in Turkish automotive
industry during recent years, the long-term and collaborative relations
based on trust building have not been achieved yet.
In the first chapter
of this study, the growth of the world automotive industry, competition,
analysis of cost and productivity, and international investments in automotive
industry are summarised. The second chapter reviews the production systems
in the World automotive industry in a chronological order. In the third
chapter, after a brief explanation about theoretical framework, the behaviour
of assembler-supplier relations in the World is examined. Chapter four
illustrates the development of the Turkish automotive industry with current
situation of both assembler and supplier industries separately. In chapter
five, the results of the questionnaire used for the purposes of this study
are put forward and discussed. The related evaluations and recommendations
attempt to overcome the shortcomings in the relations and enable the Turkish
automotive industry having a competitive structure in the international
market.
