ABSTRACT
Glass industry is one of the most dynamic and competitive sectors in Turkish
manufacturing industry. High level of value added, contribution to employment
and export volume are some basic characteristics of the sector. A sectoral analysis
of glass industry is expected to provide a background for policies and measures
in that industry for the future.Part one describes and classifies the sector
and gives an historical account for the development of glass industry in Turkey.
In part two, certain economic and technical characteristics of glass industry
are examined. Among the technical cheracteristics are smelting technology, raw
material-intensive and continuous production, and continuos investment requirement.
On the other hand, there are economic characteristics like economies of scale,
vertical integration, high fixed costs, and oligopolistic market structure.
It is vital to know these features of the industry for developing effective
policies towards the industry.
Part there focuses on the relative weight of glass industry in total manufacturing
sector of Turkish economy. In that part of the thesis, share of glass industry
in capacity utilization, production, foreign trade, value added, an investments
is analyzed. Prices, inter-sectoral relations, market structures, and the role
of small firms in the sector are also examined in that part.
Part four consists of a comperative analysis of Turkish and EU glass industries.
This part describes and analyzes sector in terms of consumption, production,
foreign trade, investment, employment, and productivity. Competition between
EU and other countries and future strategies for EU glass industry are discussed
in the part of the thesis as well.
In part five a demand projection for Turkish glass industry in presented. And
the thesis concludes with an overall evaluation of the sector.
